New Podcast Will Be Posted Soon!

I'll be posting a new podcast on Friday. Based on the last game vs Northeastern, I'm not sure there is much new to say that I have not said already this season. The team is young. They're fast, young, raw and talented. This might be the most talented team since 1999, but the truth is we just don't know. The only thing we know for certain is that UConn is really good at beating crappy teams. We have seen the team begin to come together (which is good) and I think most fans would agree that there has been significant progress made since the opening game. As a matter of fact, most of would probably agree that we did not think the team would progress this quickly (heck, even coach Calhoun seems surprised).

The point is that the game vs Northeaster did not tell us anything we did not already know. No major analysis to be done here as far as I can tell.

uconnpodcast.... A sellout?

Well, yes. I crossed over to the "dark side" and have started to allow advertising on uconnpodcast.com. Why, you may ask? Well, the revenue generated every time one of you clicks on the link helps me to maintain and pay for this site that you are visiting right now. Believe me, I'm not getting rich from this, it just helps me to pay my web hosting costs..... That's all.

By the way, I also put a link on there that will allow you to install Firefox with Googlepack. While I'm not a huge fan of Googlepack, I whole heartedly endorse the use of Firefox. For those of you who don't know what Firefox is, it an alternative web browser to Internet Explorer. The problem with IE is that it's a magnet for spyware and viruses. It's just a poorly written program. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer STOP RIGHT NOW! I'm serious. Download Firefox. It's free, safe, secure and faster than IE. You can also install really cool extensions that allow you to do things you never imagined a web browser could do. It's just a better internet experience (and safer too). Firefox is all I use at this point. I went so far as to uninstall IE from both of my computers! So, to recap, Firefox is 100% endorsed by uconnpodcast. Sorry for the advertising, but I don't think it will detract from the experience. Email me if you want to talk about any of this. dave@uconnpodcast.com

Rudy, Josh and Marcus

Rudy Gay announced today that he will skip his Junior and Senior seasons, and head to the NBA. This is a good move by Rudy, and no UConn fan should hold this against him. I think most observers would agree that Gay is still one year away from greatness, but with his kind of athleticism he is a lock for the top five. Good luck Rudy! Josh Boone, on the other hand, is a making a huge mistake. I don't think he is in a position to be drafted in the first round (at this point) and would benefit greatly from another year in college. If he comes back to UConn and has the kind of season he is capable of, he can easily be a top five, if not the #1 pick overall. Ultimately, leaving for the NBA this year will cost him millions of guaranteed dollars. Josh... Do the right thing and come back to school! Marcus Williams is going to be a solid NBA point guard. His excellent performance toward the end of the season almost certainly assured him of a draft position in the first round. He could probably benefit from another year in Storrs, but I believe he is ready to make the leap right now.

Maybe it really was the "Big Least"

How can a conference that was so dominant and so good during the regular season just fizzle out at the end? 8 teams in the tournament and none in the final four. I thought for sure there would be two. "Disapponting" is the word I would use to sum it all up. By the way, I don't want to hear any UConn fans complain about the officiating today. Was it lousy at times? Yes, but that can be said for almost any game. The officials will blow calls from time to time, but that's not why they lost today. One could argue that we wouldn't have even been playing in the game if it hadn't been for the officiating vs. UW.

Chemistry Problem

One issue that I don't hear as much as I thought I would is the perceived lack of chemistry on this team. They certainly don't have that overpowering vocal leader like they have had so many times in the past (think Khalid El-Amin). Is this potentially going to hurt them down the home stretch? There's no question that this UConn has - from top to bottom - more talent than any other in the country. Combine that with a Hall of Fame coach, and one would think the Huskies would cruise to the Final Four. It seems to me that there might be a chemistry problem within the team that is preventing them from reaching their true potential. Just a thought at 11:48 PM on a Monday night.

...that the Tate George game was on ESPN Classic today? I had forgotten what a great game that was. UConn up by 19, goes down by 1 with under 10 seconds to go. Obviously you all know what hapened next (with 1.0 seconds to go), but I must say it was good to hear some of the old names again: Murray Williams, Dan Cyrulik, John Gwynn, the list goes on..... By the way, in case you were wondering how I managed to watch a game that was televised at 1:00 PM, TiVo managed to grab it for me because it knows to record anything with "Connecticut" and "Basketball" in the title (yes, I am still gainfully employed). For those of you who don't have TiVo yet, GET IT!!!!

WE're about 18 hours away from the Selection Show and I wanted to get on the record and give my predictions as to who will make it out of the Big East. My list: UConn, Villanova, West Virginia, Pitt, Georgetown, Marquette, Syracuse and Cinci. I'll be honest and say that I'm not as confident in the Bearcats as I was a week ago, but I think they're probably in. A lot of analysts seem to think that Seton Hall is in, but I disagree. The Pirates haven't done enough to warrant an at-large bid. The Big East gets 8 teams in; You heard it here first!

Well, congratulations to Jim Boeheim and the Syracuse Orangemen for an absolutely stunning performance in the Big East Tournament. Nobody, I mean NOBODY, in their right mind would have picked Syracuse to win the Tournament last week. This is starting to make UConn's loss on Thursday not as bad as we first thought. Let's be clear though.... UConn is still the superior team and has to be considered a favorite to win the whole thing, but Syracuse is getting hot at the right time and could prove to be a tough out next week.

Big Problem!!!

Murphy's Law. I awoke this morning to discover that the computer I use to record and produce my podcasts is very, very broken. Very broken. I have an appointment this evening to have the good folks over at the Apple Store in Walnut Creek take a look at it, but considering that the machine won't even turn on, I'm not overly optimistic. I suspect it will have to be mailed back to Apple for repairs. The good news is that it usually only takes a week or so for them to do a repair. The bad news is that I probably won't be able to get the podcast out to you as promised. I'll post updates as I learn more information. I do have another computer (the one I'm writing this post on, as a matter of fact), but my recording interface, software, microphones, etc only work on an Apple, not a Windows machine. Cross your fingers that this is a quick and easy fix!!! Oh, and go Huskies!!

If you had told me a week ago that Syracuse and Pitt would be playing for the BE title, I would have called you a liar. Alas, that will be the case tonight. It's a bit of a stretch to call Syracuse a Cinderella, but I think most neutral observers will be cheering them on. McNamara is really proving that he is not overrated (as even I have called him at sevral times this season), but I still don't think he is a legitimate NBA prospect.

In any case, enjoy the game tonight. I'll put the next podcast up after the selection show Sunday evening. You can bet that I'll have plenty to say about the Huskies' performance in the BE tournament and their chances in the NCAA. I'm also trying to line up two special guests so that we can have a pannel discussion. It should be fun!

Libsyn Explains The Problems they Had Last Week....

As you all know, I was pretty frustrated last week about my podcasting host being down...seemingly for days at a time. I received this explanation from them this morning. Hopefully this is the end of the glitches.

From Libsyn:

Hello the best of the podcasting world-

We would like to give you a 5 minute overview of 'what happened this week'. For the majority of you, the transactions of this past week were fairly painless and transparent. For some, it's been a major headache. We are now on the other side of the mountain of what was one of the largest internal data structure migrations libsyn has seen to date. Trumped possibly only by the moving of our main webserver to a new data center last summer, this week we dramatically changed the internal system of how all your podcasts are stored, archived, retrieved, and served. This change is just step 1 of an ongoing improvement to the way we will be doing our media delivery network.

Aside from just being a long winded excuse for why we have been slow to answer support emails, or why the site was locked out to European users during their 'prime time' a few nights ago, or why earlier in the week we crippled our delivery capability by almost 50%, I would also like to share some near-term improvements that everyone should enjoy as the results of our work this week.

The bad.
So the big upgrade actually started last week at this time. I'm pretty sure we've said it so many times already, but currently, libsyn is still a big hobby for all of us here. No one's getting paid and we all have (somewhat demanding) day jobs... just like most of you podcasters, right? So, we all started last friday night putting into motion the "big switchover." We had been planning, and designing, and coding, and preparing for weeks leading up to this, and given the wall we were approaching in terms of storage, we had to start putting the designs into play. Friday was a very good prep day, set things up for a saturday switch, still leaving all day sunday for bug fixes. After a few unforeseen hangups on saturday, the big switchover was pushed off till sunday. The notion was to do it early sunday, giving us all day to bug fix before the big "sunday night rush" that we typically see from people uploading in time for monday morning (aka Hell Morning).

Needless to say, sunday morning turned into sunday evening and before we knew it, it was 2AM and our backs were against the wall. We HAD to start the switchover. We started the wheels in motion when, something that could best be compared to virtually tripping over the power cord happened- actually, it was more like reaching for the cold water tap and turning the hot. It wasn't a _mistake_ in action, instead, the right action was performed in the wrong place. The result: our highly tuned, prized media delivery network turned 180 degrees and ate itself for 20 seconds. The outcome was almost 1/2 the media mirrored on our system was vaporized. Gone. Poof. With less than 7 hours before the big monday morning rush, strung out on Red Bull and Bawls, 3 days behind on sleep, we gasped.

Within 20 seconds after realizing what had happened, the team composed themselves and took to the painful process of rebuilding the data structures. In order to backfill 10,000+ files (20-50MB each) across 30 servers quickly, we had no choice but to pull the plug on media delivery until we could get caught up. Believe me when I say making that call to cut the network is the absolute last thing we ever want to do. But, by 10AM we were back online and serving at around 75-80% capacity. Monday hit, and hurt, but overall we saw a less than 10% deduction in overall numbers for the day. The big traffic, which pushes well past midnight EST, makes the self-healing process for the network 100x harder. We licked our wounds overnight, but it wasn't enough to get the network back to 100% by Tuesday morning. Tuesday's usually go somewhat slower, between the big Mondays and Wednesdays of the week. But with our tail still between our legs a bit, it was another rough day. The feedburner timeouts where mitigated somewhat by some sharp collaboration between Rick of feedburner and our Marty Mulligan, but overall delivery and uploads and the like were slower than we wanted to see. The idea was to start all over again with the 'big switchover' tuesday night, however given that we wouldn't have enough manpower around wednesday morning (while part of the team was traveling) we opted for a wednesday after-work start. Wednesday went a little better now that we were back to 100%, but we were still getting dangerously close to a point of media storage that we didn't want to be. That clock was ticking and we knew we had to get the switchover started. Ever hear 'a watched pot never boils' ? Well watching an s-copy of 130gigs never finishes. The hours were pushing well past midnight, and once again, we were consumed with a few other gotchas that surfaced in preparation for the big move.

So then there was thursday. We had pretty much run out of time, and the move needed to happen. All the data was now synced between the old servers and the new cluster. Everyone had a good dinner and we sat down around 8PM. We all had our hit lists. The skype call was crystal clear that night. All systems were go for a midnight "plug-swap" .... ..

And then there's this blurr period.

Anyone ever notice that clocks skip everything between 10pm and 1am? It's true. And so, we were looking at 1:00am and still no action. Throughout the week, we had posted a notice in the support blog, but then kept pulling it offline as the dates and times kept changing. We figured anyone who actually follows that was pretty much fed up with us, and since we had calculated everything regarding the switchover, we figured 10-20 minutes of lock-out wouldn't affect anyone too much. We decided that in an hour we would make our move. We posted to support.libsyn.com that at 2AM est. we would lock down uploads, prevent anyone from logging in, and that everything would be fine in less than an hour. Now, here's where software engineering meets the real, cold, lonely world: 2am comes, we break from our virtual skype huddle and begin to execute like a killer attack squad. In 5 minutes we have all the scripts changed over that need to be changed, we're logging in and testing uploads, downloads, sideloads, and crossloads.. everything is great. Skype (y)'s abound. Talks of the (beer) celebration began. Hoopes even began to (flex). Then things got... well... weird. Pages were loading super slow. And one by one the little things didn't really work right anymore. We were now stuck mid-integration and a elusive bug was running the system amok. With all of our heads down in the code, we burrowed our way through the scripts and data, config files and schemas, trying to find the crux of the problem. This is where I (Dave the narrator of this story) sorta shut down.

I was thinking alot about the day job i had to wake up to in 4 hours. Hoopes and Marty were pretty much speaking in binary tongues as I slowly slipped from consciousness. I jolted up a moment later- damn it was 4am! We were locked out for 2 hours now and seemingly hopeless for being online anytime soon! This is where (pardon the expression) the boys showed their "juevos". I really don't even know what happened between 5 and 7:30, but the next thing I knew, we were just about ready to re-enable logins and let the world in to our new system. It was something miraculous... or Hoopes-tastic, but we turned the key, the engine roared, and we peeled out. Ya, the blinkers didn't really work yet, and there was a piece or two still hanging off, but we were able to drive, and today I can say, we have really opened her up and are having a pretty smooth ride. The pieces that we're still putting back together are new user signups, and anything involving the system-level user accounts: changing disk quota, password changes, etc. Quickcast was broken for bit, but is now working again as are all of the blog-page features. Overall this was a very strategic change in system architecture. Though the near term benefits may seem few, the long term gains from this switchover are huge.

The good
To start with, the uploads are now handled by a box that isn't doing much else, so uploads were flying today. We sampled at various times throughout the day, and even while posting record numbers for a Friday (typically a slow traffic day for podcasting) upload speed from all points in the country we tested were limited by our home internet connections and not the server at all. Media propagation has also dramatically increased. We were seeing < 1minute propagation to the 1st tier and < 3 minutes propagation to the end tier of our network throughout the day. What does that mean? The time from when you upload to the time your file is distributed, ready to be served to thousands of sets of eyes and ears has been greatly reduced. Finally, and most importantly, the startup performance of the downloads was very good today. This was a side effect we didn't anticipate as much, so before we scream success on this one, we want to give it a few days and really understand what is causing this performance increase. What I'm talking about basically, is the time it takes from when you click to when you hear/see something.

So, while I try to make it a point not to claim a win prematurely, or to get myself into trouble promising perfect, error-free service from here on out, I just wanted to report that after a long, difficult week, the team feels good with how things are sitting right now. We have many more changes in front of us, and anticipate demands on our network doubling before the end of the year. Can we keep up? Can we stay ahead of the game? Could you go and give your $ to someone else, and get a pretty good service for your dollar- the answer to all if these questions is "of course." But know this: the $ that you pay to libsyn is going into building something for all of us to use now and in the future. You can etch your name in a brick of this factory for self producers and publishers. Your content is fueling this fire, and your contributions are keeping the lights on. It's a great thing to be a part of, and we would like to thank you for making it happen. We get a lot of mail saying "thank you for your service." It really is _our_ service, together, and we all are the enablers of a great media revolution. Now more than ever the world needs your thoughts, voices, and hearts. So what are you waiting for? Start podcasting!

love

Cal vs Arizona

Those of you who listen to the podcast know that I am a transplanted Nutmeger (is that a word?) of 30 years and a 1996 UConn grad now living in San Francisco. The college hoops options in the area are somewhat limited. Cal is the closest major program and Stanford is out on the peninsula (I'm in the East Bay) and significantly less convenient. There's also St. Mary's (CA) right down the street from me, but the WCC is played at a significantly lower level (including Gonzaga). In any case, I made my first trip to Haas Pavilion tonight to see Cal take on Arizona. I have been VERY critical of the Pac 10 and especially Cal in the past, but I must say that my opinion has changed significantly tonight. First of all, Haas is a very nice on-campus facility. Other than being the "Land of Fruits and Nuts" it was quite enjoyable. The Pac 10 is not a great conference this year. Consider this: Cal is now tied for first (with UCLA), but I honestly believe the team would be 9th or 10th in the Big East. For those of you unfamiliar with Leon Powe, learn his name quickly. This kid can really play. he is a 240 lb PF with soft hands and lots of basketball smarts, not to mention a REAL quick first step. Without Powe, they would be lucky to actually make the NCAA tourney, but I think their ticket is just about to be punched. At 16 total wins and quality wins over UCLA, Washington, Arizona and Stanford the tourney looks promising for them. But, again, Powe is the real deal. If you happen to catch a Cal game on TV, I highly suggest taking a few minutes to watch it. Tonight Arizona played a 2-3 zone to try to contain him. Every time he touched the ball in the blocks, 4 defenders would collapse on him and he consistently found either a way to score or get fouled (and he can acually shoot from the line). When they went to a man defense he absolutely torched them. This guy is a classic Big East player and it's too bad we won't get the pleasure of playing against him every year. I guess I just need my UConn hoops fix. I miss Big Red and clapping to start the half. UConn really does have some of the best traditions out there. The good news is that the West Regional is in Oakland, so I may get to see the Huskies in-person yet! I'll talk to you all on Saturday.

I'll be honest, I'm a bit nervous about the game Saturday in Morgantown. Especially with WVU coming off a loss to Seton Hall, the Mountaineers have something to prove. They are still fighting for a top seed in he BE Tournament and a win over UConn would be huge. It will also go a long way toward their seeding in the NCAA.
All good things must come to an end, and so shall UConn's ride at #1. This was a very tough and talented Nova team that beat the Huskies tonight. Ultimately, I believe it was free throws that decided this one.
Lucky podcast #13 proved to be VERY unlucky for Seton Hall. Even a snowstorm on the East Coast couldn't stop 14,000 fans (and those of us watching on TV) from seeing UConn absolutely dismantle a very good Seton Hall team. The scary part is that only two starters finished in double figures (scoring). Could they have won this one by 100 if they wanted to? Probably. No use dwelling on this one, and as a result the podcast is pretty short. Focus your energy and gear up for Villanova on Monday night, rather than pick apart this one.

UConn #1

For the second week, the Huskies occupy the top spot in both polls. VU moved up to #4, while Syracuse & Louisville both dropped out. WVU, Pitt and G'Town are ranked as well. In my humble opinion, the voters should start taking a good look at Marquette as well.

WVU playd a game similar to the one at UCLA last weekend: a big second half lead disintegrates to a close one at the end. Granted, St. John's is tough, but WVU needs to learn how to put teams away. This type of play will come back to haunt them in the NCAA Tourney. In the end a 66-61 victory, mostly because of free-throws.

Also of note, Seton Hall is beating Syracuse (at Syracuse) 55-51 with 6:11 remaining.

What a day!

This was one of the more memorable days in college basketball history. #1 Duke loses to Georgetown, #2 Florida loses to Tennessee, #9 Pitt loses to St. Johns and Wisconsin loses to North Dakota State!!! The Badgers must be humiliated!

Of course the Huskies pulled off a victory over Louisville 71-58. When the new rankings come out on Monday, UConn should be ranked #1 in the country. Let me make a statement: right now UCONN IS THE BEST TEAM IN THE COUNTRY. Furthermor, unless there are some significant injuries to the team, I don't see this team going into March Madness with more than 4 losses.

About the podcast. I was in Oakland tonight (although I did get to watch the game) and am just getting home now (12:22 AM Pacific). As a result I'll have to do the podcast Sunday morning. Sorry it's a few hours later than I usually get it up.

I'm starting to put more and more post-production work into the podcasts, and I think it is really starting to pay off. Now that I have (basically) fixed the audio problems I was having earlier, I am very pleased with how the shows are turning out.
NCAA Tournament

We are several months from Selection Sunday, but it's never too early to start discussing March Madness. It is possible that the Big East sends seven schools to Big Dance. Since the tournament field expanded to 64 (1985... 1986, something like that), I don't know of any top 25 team that was left out. Assuming the six teams that are currently ranked CONTINUE to be ranked, the Big East should have a lock on six (UConn, Nova, Louisville, Syracuse, West Virginia and Pitt). The jury is still out on Cincinnati; we'll have to see how they respond over the next few weeks.

It's obvious that the Big East is the toughest conference in the country and I will be shocked if it dosen't send at least one team to the Final Four. I'm not terribly impressed with Florida and Duke won't be tested too badly in the ACC. The Big Ten looks pretty good, and I expect one Final Four team will come from there as well. As for the other two spots, we will just have to see how it all shakes out.

January 9, 2006: UConn 70, Cincinnati 59

Big Monday is off to a BIG start (in the BIG EAST). A discussion of the "Boo Birds" in Hartford as well as a recap of the game which resulted in a UConn victory by a score of 70-59. Hilton Armstrong was by far the player of the game with his double-double. Marcus Williams looked spectacular as well.

Watching the game, you never had the sense that the Huskies were going to lose. Even with the score fairly close through much of the second half, it seemed as if the Huskies we in complete control at all times.

By the way, I'm still tinkering with the volume settings. The levels on this one are a bit low, so be ready to turn your iPod up a bit.

Fans in Hartford

The Connecticut media (and Jim Calhoun) seem to be making a big deal of the crowd booing thing in the 1st half of the game Saturday. Personally, I don't have a problem with it. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Huskies, but anyone who paid good money to to watch that was well within their right to do so. Obviously, there is never a place for profanity or crass behavior, but booing isn't a problem for me.

In the end it seems to have done the trick: the team started playing better.

As talented as they are, they are still trying to find their identity. Rudy Gay is starting to understand how important his role is (and starting to understand how good he is), Marcus Williams is finding his sea legs and several key freshmen (Austrie, Garrison, Johnson and Adrien) are adjusting to the college game.

The team will obviously fall from their #2 spot when the new rankings come out Monday afternoon (although probably not as far as I originally thought, given the number of losses by top 25 teams this weekend). Just don't forget thet #2 in early March is much better than #2 in early January. They'll be back and the boos on Saturday will be long forgotten.
